September Challenge Continues: Post 4

Welcome to day 4! Today I went to the gym in the evening. This is something that I have not done before as usually I go right after work around 2:30 and never stay longer than one hour. Let me start by saying that I believe the gym to be a strange place, full of people all attempting to do the same thing.

My gym can be divided into three groups of people. The elderly who are there to get their heart rate up and stay alive, the blow-hards that talk really loudly about how many reps they did or that strut around in sports bras and spandex shorts, and then there are the people like me; just trying to get in and out as fast as possible and not be noticed. I will make a point to say that I am not attractive at the gym and I do not want to make friends at the gym, nor do I want to know anyone that goes to the same gym as me. Why people join gyms to make friends is something that I will never understand.

Anyways, today was my first evening gym experience, right after rush-hour, the busiest I have ever seen the gym. What I couldn’t understand was the amount of people that are involved in this new gym culture that I’ve been exposed to shouting across the room to each other, chatting about classes, or just walking around and not exercising. Can someone explain to me how this type of culture exists? Perhaps people aren’t sweating as profusely as I am while at the gym, not necessarily because I am working harder, but just because I sweat a lot, possibly more than normal humans. So once I am done sweating I usually try to leave as soon as possible to go home and take a shower.

I work out so I can eat as much ice cream as I want without feeling like a fat-ass all of the time. Perhaps I am just being negative towards a really awesome gym culture that I am misjudging, or perhaps this is a type of culture that is confusing all on its own to people who need to work out in order to eat ice cream.

Who knows… I realize there isn’t a whole to this post, but I find it a funny and intriguing topic.
